Lettering somebody else put there

A share of the people who arrive here are trying to take somebody else's mark off somebody else's picture. Pretending otherwise would be silly, so here is where this site stands, in its own words.

The position, stated

Taking a mark out of a picture is something this tool can do, and there are good reasons to want it — your own old logo, a client proof you own, a stamp on a photograph of your own family. What it cannot do is give you a right you never had. A licensed image with the mark cleared off is still a licensed image, and you would be the one explaining that.

That is the whole position and it is not going to be softened. No page on this site describes the instrument as a way around a licence, a stock term or a paywall, and no page will tell you that a result is undetectable, forensic-proof or safe to pass off. Those are copy rules here as much as they are product ones, and they are checked before this site ships.

The good reasons, which are most of them

Photographers clear their own marks from their own frames every day of the week: a proof went out with a watermark, the client paid, and the clean file has been lost in three years of moving between machines. Studios take an old logo off a picture they own outright because the logo changed. Families take a date stamp off a print their father scanned, or a caption off a screenshot of their own conversation.

None of that needs defending, and a tool that refused all of it in order to look responsible would simply be a worse tool for the people using it properly. There is no account here, so this site could not tell the two cases apart even if it wanted to — which is exactly why the honest thing to do is say where the line is and leave the choice with the person who has to live with it.

One practical note

A mark designed to be hard to take out usually is. A large tiled mark across the whole frame is not lettering over a background, it is lettering over everything, and a box around it contains the entire picture — leaving the fill nothing to work from. If the mark covers the subject rather than sitting beside it, no fill in this network can give you the photograph underneath, because the photograph underneath was never in the file you have.

Questions we get asked

Can I use this on a stock photograph I have not licensed?
The tool will clear the mark; it will not give you a licence. A stock image with the mark cleared off is the same image under the same terms, and the person who would have to explain that is you. Nothing on this site is offered as a way around a licence, a stock term or a paywall.
What about my own old logo on my own photographs?
That is the case this site was built for, along with client proofs you own and stamps on pictures of your own family. Nobody needs to justify clearing their own mark off their own work, and there is no account here to ask them to.
Does a cleared picture look untouched to software?
This site makes no claim of that kind and will not. A fill rewrites pixels, and rewritten pixels leave traces that ordinary inspection may miss and analysis may not. Anybody choosing what to do on the strength of a promise about undetectability should assume that promise was never made here.
