JPG or HEIC straight from the phone works; a full-size original gives the fill more real ground than a messaging-app copy.

No photo handy?

For camera pictures: overlay captions and stamps open ticked, the scene's own signs open unticked, and the Patch fill — which keeps the photograph's grain — is selected to start.

The controls arrive with the frame, and nothing is downloaded until you press something that names the size.

Several files at once opens the folder queue instead, which detects the lettering in each picture separately rather than asking for one rectangle to cover them all.

Photographs are not posters

A graphic's ground is usually flat, so almost any fill disappears into it. A photograph's ground has grain, noise and light falling across it, and a flat or blurred patch reads as a sticker. That is why this page opens on Patch, which lifts real pixels from just beside each box and matches their brightness.

The other difference is that photographs contain lettering that belongs there. A shop front, a T-shirt, a bus — removing those changes what the picture shows, so they open unticked and the text map says why.

The scene guard is a measurement — baseline slope and how the ink's brightness drifts across the region — not a reading of the words.

Where this mode goes wrong

  • Text over a face or a hand.No fill can recover features it never saw; the result is a plausible smudge.
  • A railing, horizon or cable through the box.Patch may copy the wrong height of the line and the model may invent one; diffusion is the honest fallback.
  • A heavily compressed copy.Messaging apps leave block artefacts around lettering that are part of what needs rebuilding.

What stays on this device

The photo is decoded and filled in this tab, HEIC included. EXIF is read here to offer the date choice, and GPS is never written into the saved file.

Questions about photographs

Will a sign in the photo be removed too?

Not unless you tick it. Lettering whose baseline is not level, or whose ink carries the scene's own lighting, is read as part of the scene and opens unticked; lettering laid flat over the picture opens ticked. Both are listed with their confidence so you can overrule either.

Which fill suits foliage, sky or fabric?

Sky and soft background: diffusion or flat colour — nothing to repeat, nothing to smear. Foliage, gravel, fabric: Patch, which copies real grain from beside the box (the default on this page), or the structure-aware model. If a line such as a railing runs through the box, use diffusion and accept a soft patch rather than a wrongly invented line.

Does it open iPhone (HEIC) photos?

Yes. HEIC files are decoded in this tab by a bundled decoder rather than sent anywhere to be converted, and the orientation the phone recorded is applied once.

Is location data removed on save?

Always. This page opens on "Date + camera": a saved JPG keeps the capture date and the camera name and nothing else. "Drop all" writes no EXIF at all; "All but GPS" keeps the rest. GPS is never written back under any setting.
